Emboldened by the success of our long-haul flights in 2023, the tropical South Seas itinerary was the main appeal for this cruise but also the opportunity to experience another luxury cruise line.
Similar to Oceania, Regent Seven Seas is a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Lines and has a reputation for exceptional service and fine food. So in addition to the
exotic itinerary, there was much to look forward to!
Sadly, an earthquake off Port Vila, Vanuatu in December 2024 had already resulted in a substitute tendering stop at Mystery Island but even that had to be abandoned on the day because of inclement weather. And while we
made both stops in Fiji, that bad weather caught up with us again, resulting in our missing Apia, Western Samoa as well as Pago Pago, when that port was closed due to landslides on the island!
Nevertheless, all the places we visited were wonderful, as were the complimentary excursions we chose, and our post-cruise stay at the InterContinental Resort in Tahiti was a great success.
Unfortunately, we were not so enthused about the ship. The 'StarLink' internet lauded beforehand proved unreliable at times and we felt that service, with a few notable exceptions, was less than
stellar. The speciality restaurants were a slight disappointment too; while the food was good, it was not exceptional - which was, after all, why we booked Regent Seven Seas in the first place. Given the high price of Regent
and their bold claims of 'unrivalled excellence', we had expected better and while everything was generally good or even very good, nothing seemed to us to justify the excess cost compared with other luxury lines.
